My husband, Milt Lee, and I live on the edge of the Black Hills of South Dakota. I am an
instructor at Oglala Lakota College and every week during the semesters I drive 2-3 times out to the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is a two-hour drive each way across prairielands and the Badlands. A truly spectacular drive–but it does get long.
My life is about creating. I am a writer, have about fourteen ideas everyday and wish I could do every single one of them. Milt and I celebrated our 19th anniversary on January 6th, 2008. Together we have created many things; a happy life, a truckload of radio documentaries on Native peoples, a garden, grandchildren–well, and more.
Besides teaching, my passion is writing. I started reading voraciously when I was very young and have never stopped. I have one of the hungriest minds and its appetite is never satisfied. But writing is tops. There is something about an image or idea unfolding on paper (or screen) that is like music–it has rhythm, cadence, beat. It is also like painting–it has images and color and mood. It is also like dance–it has movement and feeling and stretch. What could be better?
On a more practical note, I am 54 and Milt will celebrate his 60th this February 6th, 2008. Together we have 7 children and 9 grandchildren with two more on the way. Our children are the lights of our lives–and we are also most happy to have empty nests.
Most importantly, Milt and I wish to bring our lives into close alignment with our beliefs. We believe that we are truly “all related”. We believe that a good education and peace should be the birthright of all human beings. We believe that creating is the answer to depression and sadness and many ailments of the world. We believe that resources should be cared for as precious commodities and shared like leaves in fall. And we believe that Earth is the mother of all.
